Should I tell my family I want to be a doctor?
Lesharo asked:
I’m secretly studying to go pre-med. I already got my B.A. in a liberal arts subject and I want to go through a pre-med program so that I can become a doctor. I want to go into dermatology residency upon graduation.
The reason why I’ve kept it a secret is that my family is not supportive. They’ve already had another relative of mine who graduated med school and decided at the very last minute that he did not want to be a doctor. He now works for $45K/yr as a technology consultant.
My family has a hard time understanding why someone like me wants an advanced degree. I am, after all, a first generation college graduate. I practically paid for undergrad all by myself. They did give me $7,000 in cash, but it was nothing compared to the $65,000 I had to borrow on my own ot pay for undergrad. I’ll probably end up having to foot the bill entirely for med school as well.
Should I tell my family now or should I wait until I have the lab coat and diploma ready?

just wait and tell them later, if you want to be a doctor go for it, that is amazing, i like ppl who want to be a doc because they wana be a doc not becuse their family is telling them to be a doc. later doc
heck yes.
you really should.
your family should know.
it will just cause problems if you dont tell them and if
you do and they dont like it then…thats not right and it shouldnt bring you down also good for you being the first one.. pursue wat you want not wat you feel comfratable doing for your family… i mean it is nice to have there support but its also nice to do what you want!
Good for you! Personally, I would wait until I had been accepted to med school before telling them, because you already know they will give you a hard time about it, and you don’t need to et discouraged right now. Plus it is hard to get into med school, and on the chance that you might not get admitted on your first try, you really don’t want them to know that.
Follow your dreams, but keep those who would try to ruin them at a distance until you are far enough along that they can’t discourage you.
I think u should tell ur family about u wanting to be a doctor
Surprise them. It sounds like he didn’t know what he really wanted to do, but you seem like you do, so finish your education, and then surprise them when you give them graduation invites. I’m sure it will be a welcome surprise, they will see that you are serious. The last thing you need right now is to be discouraged. Go out for your dreams and don’t let anyone stop you. Good luck.
I would tell them, definitely. Being a doctor is a prestigious job that you should be proud of training for. If your parents don’t want to support you, just follow what you want to do and keep working as hard as you always have (which is extremely hard working!) Don’t let them squash your dreams of becoming a doctor. They also may get angry if you do med school and all that good stuff behind their backs.
