What does a Pre-Sales Consultant do?

Scott G asked:

I have recently gained my MSc e-commerce, and am struggling to decide what career path I should take.

I took the business stream of the MSc e-commerce in part 2 of the course. Areas covered included e-commerce law and web-based marketing, but also included web system design and implementation, internet security and internetworking.

At first I persued Web Development jobs, but have now realised that this is not my forte. I do love technology, and embrace all new technologies, but I feel I don’t have the aptitude for web development.

A friend of mine suggested Pre-Sales Consultancy as a career. I don’t know much about this area, but it does appeal to me.

Can anyone shed any more light on this profession, and any tips on getting that elusive “foot in the door”?

Cheers

Need advise -a career break - what’s better for a layman functional person to get into - Oracle Apps or SAP?

Will D asked:

I live in India (Chennai) and i’m basically a Sales/Marketing person with over 3 years experience in IT product sales.Regarding my educational background, i completed my B.Tech in IT three and a half years back… somehow landed up in Marketing rather than S/W app.development or a Technology consultant… From a sales perspective, i know a little about ERP Technologies like SAP, Oracle Apps and Peoplesoft, as i was briefly assisting one of the teams in my earlier company in a market research initiative for securing project/implementation contracts in SAP…
I’m out of a job now… i and my colleagues had to quit our jobs recently due to problems in our company… i’m trying to get my career back on track…for a while now, i’ve been mulling over the idea of trying to get back into technology - as an ERP Functional or Technical consultant, as i’m quite interested in this field. How is the job market in India for Oracle Apps consultants vs. SAP consultants in the long run?

The Right stole 2000 and 2004.Is their Machine working overtime today. ?

Subvertor … asked:

“Last Friday, a federal court judge in Cleveland, Ohio, ordered Michael Connell, an information-technology consultant to the McCain ‘08 campaign, to give a deposition in a court proceeding.
Connell is a former associate of Karl Rove, who is believed by those familiar with the events in question to have engaged in witness intimidation to prevent testimony about what happened in Ohio in 2004. They also believe that IT companies associated with the Republican Party have redeveloped the capacity to manipulate electronic voting results in Tuesday’s election, both within Ohio and outside, including Pennsylvania and other key battleground states such as Colorado and New Mexico. One such firm, Triad GSI, is managing voter registration databases in 55 of Ohio’s 88 counties and is hosting 25 of those databases.

Has anyone else noticed how smug and confident McCain has become suddenly over the last week ? Anyone here play Poker ? ..I can always spot when someone is sitting on a “Hand” and in the immortal words of Jerry Seinfeld…
McCain looks like he’s got “Hand”…

Will we actually be able to Vote Obama in or will it be stolen away from us again ?

LEGAL Help (10 pts for best answer)?

Rick asked:

Advance Technology Consultants (ATC) contracted with RoadTrac to provide software and client software systems for the products of global positioning satellite (GPS) technology being developed by RoadTrac. RoadTrac agreed to provide ATC with hardware with which ATC’s softwre would interface. Problems soon arose, however. ATC claimed that RoadTrac’s hardware was defective, making it difficult to develop the software. ToadTrac contended that its hardware was fully functional and that ATC had simply failed to provide supporting software. ATC told RoadTrac that it considered their contract terminated. RoadTrac filed a suit in a Georgia state court against ATC, charging breach of contract. During discovery, RoadTrac requested ATC’s customer lists and marketing procedures. Before producing this material, ATC asked the court to limit RoadTrac’s use of the information. Meanwhile, RoadTrac and ATC had become competitors in the GPS industry. How should the court rule regarding RoadTrac’s discover

Business / Technology / Management Consultants - what does it take to be one ?

Tsangpo asked:

Hey Guys,

I have a reached a point in my career where I will have to make the call to move further as to what do I sincerely desire to do. Whatever I am doing right now is a reasonably paid, decent job with good people around me. But I am just not feeling right about it - I do not think I belong there. I have to make a decision which will have to be honest enough to my perseverence and branching off from carefully tailored calls. I am currently in IT and have never been satisfied with what I have had to deliver - both in terms of work and in terms of characterization that you tend to imbibe out of work. I would like to make a switch over to the field of consultancy - but I remain undecided about whether I need to get into the Technology,Business,Management,Functional consulting area. I would like to know what one is supposed to possess for taking on such a role and executing it successfully. I like the perks that come along with these roles such as travelling, meeting new cultures.

Is there a market for providing training in the general concepts of technology to consumers and small biz?

homer742 asked:

I have a side business where I provide Geek Squad-like support. I also work in a Mom & Pop used computer store. The only thing that I feel true entrepreneurial spirit for is teaching/training tech stuff. I’m a slow learner, so I don’t have as much to offer businesses in providing support for their technology as most of my competition. Even though I provide better customer service on the things I do support, I feel like I’ll never be the “one stop shop” that businesses expect in a consultant. I’ve found that fast learners (most who are successful in the tech fields) are deficient teachers. I’ve found the career colleges to be a racket. Any thoughts are appreciated.

What are the best ways to learn more about programming/technology?

eXIstence24 asked:

I want to be prepared for my job that starts in 6 months. I’m looking for advice on certifications I should get or just general ways that I can start expanding my knowledge so I can be successful.

My job is as a IT consultant. My major is computer science and engineering and most of my work will revolve around programming and consulting.

I know the obvious things like read magazines and books, but are there any good magazines out there that I should be subscribed to?

Or maybe websites I should check out?
