What are the best ways to learn more about programming/technology?

eXIstence24 asked:

I want to be prepared for my job that starts in 6 months. I’m looking for advice on certifications I should get or just general ways that I can start expanding my knowledge so I can be successful.

My job is as a IT consultant. My major is computer science and engineering and most of my work will revolve around programming and consulting.

I know the obvious things like read magazines and books, but are there any good magazines out there that I should be subscribed to?

Or maybe websites I should check out?

Tax question: Independent consultant vs. employee?

jscheese asked: I work for a technology company that employs about 40 people. I have been working here since January. I work at the office on their computer, during their normal hours (for the most part). I was hired as a “temp” in January, but as they normally go through a temp agency, and I applied through word of mouth, they pay me as they would the temp agency–with nothing taken out of my check. They classify me as being paid as a consultant. However, I do not fit into the IRS’s 20point check to fit as an independent consultant for tax purposes. Under the IRS quidelines, I am an employee. And looking into this I heard I was supposed to be paying these taxes quarterly? Can anyone explain to me what steps I need to take to take care of my taxes? Would you mind having your naked body photographed and stored in a Federal database?

GK asked:

Stand by, air travelers, because the U.S. Homeland Security Department is preparing to install and test high-tech machines at airport checkpoints that will ”See Thru Clothing!”

Get ready for electronic portals known as backscatters, expected to be tested at a handful of airports this year, that use X-ray imaging technology to allow a screener to scan a body. And yes, the body image is detailed. Let’s not be coy here, ladies and gentlemen: ”Well, you’ll see basically everything,” said Bill Scannell, a privacy advocate and technology consultant. ”It shows nipples. It shows the clear outline of genitals.”

Computer expert Prashant Chopra pleads in child sex sting

Cleveland — A computer technology expert who helped program local college computers pleaded guilty on Wednesday for trying to arrange sex with a 12-year old girl.

Prashant Chopra, 30, of Cleveland Heights, pleaded guilty in Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court to three counts of importuning and one attempted abduction.

He remains free on a $250,000 bond but had to forfeit his 2006 Mercedes that he drove in to meet the girl. His computers were seized by police.

Ryan Miday, a spokesman for the Cuyahoga County prosecutor’s office, said Chopra began chatting with a person he thought was a 12-year-old girl last July. The 12-year-old was actually an undercover police officer in the Ohio Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.

Chopra drove in his Mercedes to meet the girl for sex and was arrested in September.

Chopra, who lives in a $1 million mansion, worked as an Internet technology consultant at CampusEAI Consortium which helps universities and governments incorporate the latest Internet technologies.

He will be sentenced in September.

In a sole proprietorship, can you hire consultants to do work and not have to worry about tax issues?

Matthew M asked:

I run a sole proprietorship business that offers technology services. Periodically I get work requests that fall outside of my knowledge and experience.

In those situations, I’d like to be able to enlist outside consultants and pay them for the work.

My question is, can i do this without having to pay taxes, etc, or report any forms to the IRS. Ideally, I’d pay them for the work and it would then be their responsibility to pay the taxes.

Can this be done with a sole proprietorship and if not, HOW can it be done?
Actually, the work will be done on a contratc basis (consulant was a bad word to use). So, since the work will be project based and the workers will never be at my location, do I still need insurance?

What do u think my boss will say if i take 10% paycut to work from home one day a week?

seafood10 asked:

here is the scenerio…i make about $60k/year plus bonus. im an IT guy for a financial/technology consultant firm. business been slow and they have been laying off some consultants and not-essential office staffs(marketing guy and recruiters).

i have been with the company since sept. 2007. im not that busy maybe like couple of hrs of work each day. i support about 60-70 ppl. and i always wanting to work from home. so what do u think if i tell my boss if im willing to take a 10% paycut to work at home one day a week? what do u think he would say?

my boss like to save money and always ask me what we can do to save the company money etc. but he also is a tough boss. he likes to work long hour in the office. he comes in 8:30am and work till sometimes 7 or 8 pm at nite.

so if i ask him this, do u think he will get offended and fire me? or not give me a bonus or a salary raise? what is the worst that can come of this? maybe he thinks im making too much?
btw…i dont mind taking a 10% pay cut..i still can survive with the paycut…and this is in nyc if it helps. also would u think my boss will think im lazy if i ask him this?

I hate to bring up the old nagging question of dads helping stay at home moms, but what is an ok expectation?

Sheri E asked:

I’m a RN by trade and my husband is a computer/technology consultant who works from home. I have been a SAHM since our dd was born 21/2 year ago. I love staying at home and raising our child, but like everything else there are a few rubs. First, my husband wants me stay home (he didn’t have that growing up and feels it’s very important). However, we don’t live very comfortably on 1 income (he borrows $$ from his parents to support his business). Now here comes the selfish part. I love my husband, but I feel like if I have to go back to work b/c he insists on “making his ‘career’ work” instead of getting a “real job” (y’know…9-5, that sort of thing) that I might as well separate b/c then I will be doing it all myself anyway. Chores, kid, bills, yardwork…I do it all! He doesn’t bathe her, put her to bed, take her on weekends to give me a break. I never have any time off. I feel like I’m losing my identity, and not the nursing one…the human one! Am I wrong to want more?
Thank you FB128…you helped me to put some of my feelings into better words that I can bring up to him, and some of things you said are good points (particularly the part about fatherhood not having set hours). I think that’s something that he can understand and it’s reasonable–not just the same old nagging I feel like I always do to enact change. You were right about not having spare $$ for daycare and maids, too. Luckily my sister sits for free for us so we can go out on dates, but with this looming over our relationship it’s hard to even want to spend time together. I’d love just time for myself alone, but that makes me feel selfish and greedy. On the other hand, ignoring my needs makes me want to walk out of my house and just keep going…and that’s sad. Someone suggested I get on an antidepressant, but I doubt that me taking a pill will make him more helpful ;)

Invested $10M to design patented switching technology. What equity % should I want from $100M VC investor?

Inventor asked:

I have secured multiple patents to a revolutionary technology that could bring substantive improvements to (router, mainframe) switching technology and have identified potential funding in the tens of millions of dollars to fund a startup venture to build the product (which would essentially compete with or eventually — meaning after 3-5 years of prototype development, commercialization work, etc. — be bought by Cisco). What percentage of the equity should I together with my small technical team hold out for with the venture financiers? FYI, we have invested about $10M to date and are talking about raising about $100M in phases to build the commercial offering. In all likelihood, we will remain as technical consultants, but will have little influence over the commercialization effort/strategy. Interested in hearing from other tech-saavy entrepreneurs and inventors that have relevant experience, especially in the area of cryogenics and potentially from commercialization partners.
